Monday Maker David and his u-ni-k blankets

David makes beautiful cotton blankets & scarves. 
For us, he makes baby blankets. 
The idea originated from his lovely blankets given to myself when my daughter was born almost 3 years ago.

Each blanket is made from 100% breathable cotton layers
Each is Hand stitched from recycled saris
Each measures approx 90cm x 90cm
Machine washable, Do not tumble dry



Here are a few that have already found happy homes.

Elsie's 1st blanket Elsie's parents are BIG fans of kantha blankets. They already had a beautiful one they bought long before she arrived. This is the one they chose, a balance of beautiful tiny blue flowers perfect for a boy and girl

Elsie's made to order

As Elsie's parents are BIG fans of kantha blankets, this blanket was commissioned for her as a gift when she was born. The likes and dislikes of the parents were sent to David and he chose a simple selection of flowers pre stitched to choose from. A larger single size was chosen over a baby size, so Elsie could always have and love her blanket with her. A blanket to roll over on as a baby, a blanket to take to University to remind her of home and a blanket to put over her knees when she becomes older.



Primroses blanket

Primrose was born on a beautiful sunny February afternoon. Her parents didn't know if if she was a girl or a boy but somehow this blanket was perfectly chosen for her without knowing. By just knowing the parents very well.
She loves her blanket and at just 1 year old her Mummy has said that her beautiful kantha blanket was one of the things that helped her sleep through. By laying the light weight blanket over her sleeping bag kept her snug and warm during the winter months and helped her sleep through the night.



Winfred's blankets

You've all met Winnie. Winnie's Mum is our newest maker. When Winifred was due, her Mum and Dad wanted to be surprised by her sex. So a blanket suitable for a girl and a boy was chosen. Her parents were described to David and the two blankets below are what was made as a result. Much loved and growing ore beautiful with age just like Winifred.

Winnies Story

Winifred has used her Shuktara blankets from the moment she came home from the hospital; to make any place cosy and beautiful.

Even in an old wheelbarrow!  

They are most often found in her cot for her to sleep under as they keep her just the right temperature, but they always come with her when we go away and on special outings. We love them.

They will be cherished forever.

You all met Winifred Judy Rose in my little blog of last year. Her Mummy Lucy and Daddy Gregor happily shared this little picture of her, snuggled under her new Shuktara blanket when she was a few weeks old.  If you missed it have a read here. Today, Winfred and her Mum have lovingly shared these lovely pictures of Winnie using her blankets through her very first year.


When choosing a blanket for Lucy, one of my dearest friends, I couldn't quite decide which floral or colour to choose. Lucy and Gregor had decided to keep the gender of little Winnie a surprise so I was in a little conundrum as to which flower would suit new baby.
So I decided the only thing to do was to describe both new Mum and Dad to be to David of Shuktara, the guru of flowers, and ask him to make a blanket for both Mum and Dad. Hoping baby boy or girl would be a little reflection of their Mum and Dad.
As always, David managed to choose the floral's perfectly.

Winnie's Mum is a magical seamstress with a passion for all that is vintage. She has combined her love of vintage with her wonderful talent of sewing and together with her new passion, Winfred, she has made exquisite 1950's baby painting smocks that work perfectly as little dresses for little ones.

Luckily for us she has agreed to make some extra special things for us, under her "made in Somerset by Lucy Lichfield" label...coming soon!

With the arrival of spring…flowers have started to bloom and gardens and parks are being filled with colour and beautiful scented smells.

Spring is my favourite season. The earth, air and flowers smell gorgeous and fresh and the coming season is exciting.

It may finally be time to pack away those big jumpers, big coats and snow boots and make room for Spring and Summer.

We celebrate with all things floral and flowery.

A day in the life of our Shuktara blanket.

Anna and I truly believe in the products and makers we have working with us on u-ni-k. So much so that we use, treasure and love the u-ni-k pieces we have ourselves. Today's blog is all about DangerBaby and her Shuktara blanket.

We don't have a name for our blanket, everything is “DaDah!” at the moment, unless she's trapped her fingers in a drawer / cupboard / something she knows she's not allowed to play with and then it's “mummmmmMa”. So for ease of reading we'll call it “blanket” from hereonin.

Blanket is usually waiting for DangerBaby on the sofa bed in her room, we're currently not sleeping with a blanket as it's warm and she wakes up hot and upset if we put one in with her at night. So on the sofa it sits waiting for the little toddling feet to run over and throw her face into it to appreciate the softness. It's then up and out of there dragged with Bunny Bunny off to a bathroom or a bedroom to empty all the drawers. Downstairs for CBeebies and breakfast!

After the hour struggle to remove Bunny Bunny and Blanket off DangerBaby, it's shower and clothes time . Back downstairs to hoover, clean the kitchen, empty all the kitchen cupboards – if she hides under Blanket then I obviously can't see her empty the cupboards... and if I can then it's obviously Bunny Bunny that I caught...hmmmm, some more 'run amok' type activities and then lunch.

After our lunctime nap, we go out on an adventure. Blanket comes in the car as the settler with noisy book (DangerBaby has always hated the car. Screamed from the very first day we put her in a car, a little better now but boy I used to be house bound). I say adventure – usually a trip to Tesco or the post office, in a trolly blanket becomes the soft cushion on DangerBaby's back, offering protection from the hard trolly when she turns to see the other children go whizzing past.

Back home to play in the garden, Blanket is at its best here. A tent one minute, a theatre curtain the next, a soft landing from the slide, a princess headdress for peekaboo, a table cloth for tea time with teddy, something soft to wipe those gardening hands with. A quick afternoon snack with blanket and Bunny Bunny before Bedtime Hour begins and supper.

The long struggle to remove Blanket and Bunny Bunny from DangerBaby starts after Supper as it's bath, story and bedtime for our tired little girl. Bunny Bunny goes in the cot but Blanket goes on the sofa bed, waiting for the start of another lovely day.
